Don’t Look for Hot Niches, Find Profitable Niche Markets

If you’ve been around Internet marketing for any length of time, I’m sure you know “niche marketing” is hot. Every marketing guru on the planet is pushing his/her secret weapon for finding tiny, untapped niches that will make you rich overnight. And you are supposed to buy their product/training and build your entire online business around that.

Big mistake!

Here’s the typical niche marketing process:

  1. Identify a red-hot niche by doing keyword research
  2. Set up a mini-site or sales page
  3. Add a giveaway and build your list
  4. Create an information product or buy one with Resale Rights or promote affiliate products
  5. Spend hundreds of dollars on Google AdWords to drive traffic
  6. Spend countless hours in article, video and forum marketing in the hopes of getting free traffic
  7. Start bombarding your list with emails to buy your products
  8. Make some money and repeat the whole process in the next hot niche

There is a much better and more profitable way than the above process. This is a key niche-marketing concept that I’ve learned from Jimmy D. Brown. What is it?

Instead of chasing after hot niches, find profitable niche markets instead. Read that statement again. There’s a subtle but important difference between the two methods.

The key difference is you want to select a niche market so you can generate multiple sales from the same customer.

Here’s the extra step that you need to interject into the standard niche marketing process that I’ve describe above.

Create additional related products to sell to your existing customer and lead lists.

This extra step will skyrocket your sales and profits because:

  1. You’ve already done the heavy lifting of acquiring a paying customer when they bought your first product. Why waste that golden opportunity by moving to another niche and starting all over again? Any salesperson will tell you that it is much easier to sell to an existing customer than to constantly find new ones. So, offer your current customers additional, related products before you move on and you’ll make much more money with very little extra effort.
  2. Same goes for your list. They’ve show an interest in your niche product, why reinvent the wheel? Instead, offer them additional, related products and upsells to convert them into lifetime customers before you go looking for other “niches.”

Let me give you an example: You could set up a mini-site and start selling information products on the latest craze of açaí berry. Make a few bucks and wait for the next craze to hit.

Instead, you could set up shop around the evergreen topic of weight loss and niche it to your advantage. The broad topic of interest in your niche market is “losing weight and getting in shape.”

You could create a series of small reports on a variety of niche topics within the broad interest. Here are some examples:

  • How to Flatten Your Tummy and Tone Up Abs
  • Exercises You Can Do While Sitting at Your Desk
  • Low Carb Diet Plans
  • 7 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism
  • Recipes for Low-Calorie Meals at Home
  • Staying Fit for Life by Walking
  • A Beginner’s Guide to Yoga

I could go on but you get the idea. Each small report is on a different topic but related to the niche market. Now you can create repeat sales because it is highly likely that most people on your list would be interested in more than one topic about losing weight and staying in shape.

What you’ve done is created a synergy where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. That’s how you make more money by finding a profitable niche market instead of chasing after red-hot niches.

I admit, I have not been on this webpage in a long time… however it was another joy to see It is such an important topic and ignored by so many, even professionals. I thank you to help making people more aware of possible issues.
    Great stuff as usual…

  4. Excellent point Achinta!

You definitely want to stick with the evergreen niches for most of your sites. These niches will give you the steady income without the fluctuations of the hot niches. That’s not to say that you can’t explore some of the hot niches once you get some steady ones built.

You have also made a very good point in that it is good to have a little more broad niche at the center of several different more defined niches. This allows you to have a more general topic with the spokes (specific niches) driving additional traffic and link juice to your main niche site.
